Yesterday (5th April), YBH Youth tried to hold its demonstration
which had all the necessary legal permits. The demonstration was to be held in
front of the Turkish embassy in Nicosia. The police barricaded the region and
did not let the demonstrators reach the area. The demonstrators informed the
police that their actions were perfectly legal and they held all the necessary
permits. However, the police announced that this was the orders they received
and that Turkish foreign minister Abdullah Gul was in the embassy and they
would not let them read their declaration.
The demonstrators then blocked the
road to show their determination to exercise their legal democratic rights. The
bypassing its legal rights attacked the demonstrators and used violence to push
them to the side-walk near the Central Bank offices. After waiting for a short
period, the demonstrators blocked the road partially and announced that police
used violence against peaceful demonstrators who were simply exercising their
legal rights in a non-violent manner. The authorities were informed about the
event and there was no negative indication from the authorities. This was a
totally arbitrary, illegal action by the police. The spokesman, Murat Kanatli,
also announced that they would return to the Turkish embassy and repeat their
action. Afterwards, he also read the prepared declaration where they outlined
the involvement of Turkey in affairs of north Cyprus and their desire for a new
Cyprus.
They then waited in the green are
near the Democracy High school for Abdullah Gul and his group to leave the
embassy. At 6pm, when they were approaching the demonstrators the police
surrounded the demonstrators and beaten some of the demonstrators. They tried
to destroy the banners that said, "Turkey is responsible of this
geography", "A New Cyprus is possible", "Democracy and
equality NOW!” The youth showed their determination and stood in place chanting
"PEACE IN YOUR FACE!", "DOWN WITH FASISM!, "THIS COMMUNITY
IS EMBARRASED OF YOU!". After everything calmed down, Murat Kanatli
announced that they were not in violation of any laws but police has bypassed
its legal rights and used violence against the demonstrators. They will try to
meet police head Erden Karabag at 3pm on Monday to discuss these events and
called the press for a press conference afterwards.
